Neurocognitive Functioning of Adolescents with Clinical High Risk for Psychosis, other Psychiatric Symptoms, and Psychosis

Introduction
Clinical High Risk of Psychosis (CHR-P) condition and the clinical validity of at-risk criteria are still little studied in child and adolescent population.
ObjectivesThis study aimed to discover neurocognitive profiles of adolescents with CHR-P, compared with adolescents with psychosis and youth with other psychiatric symptoms that do not meet CHR-P criteria.
MethodsWe divided 116 adolescents (12-18 years old) in three groups according to the semi-structured interview Comprehensive Assessment of At-Risk Mental States (CAARMS): psychosis, attenuated psychosis syndrome (APS), non-APS. Moreover, we administered Wechsler scales to assess the IQ, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test to assess abstract reasoning and flexibility, Rey-Osterrieth complex figure to assess planning and attention, and Trail Making Test to assess psychomotor speed, visual attention and task switching. We administered BVN 12-18 subtests to assess lexical denomination, verbal and nonverbal working memory, selective auditory, visual attention, phonemic and categorial fluency, reasoning and problem solving.
ResultsNineteen adolescents met criteria for psychosis, 47 for APS, and 50 did not meet criteria neither for psychosis nor for APS. APS group performed better than psychosis group and similar to non-APS group in processing speed, planning, visual attention, and categorial fluency. APS did not show a significant difference from the other groups in working memory and backward digit span, showing an intermediate profile; non-APS and psychosis groups still differed significantly in these functions.
ConclusionsIdentifying typical neurocognitive profiles leads to more accurate diagnoses and early intervention that can lead to better patient outcomes.

Assessing Family Functioning Before and After an Integrated Multidisciplinary Family Treatment for Adolescents With Restrictive Eating Disorders

Introduction
Previous studies applying the Lausanne Trilogue Play (LTPc), a semi-structured method for observing family dynamics, highlighted dysfunctional interaction patterns in the families of individuals affected by restrictive eating disorders (REDs). Family-centered approaches are considered the first-line treatment for severe cases of REDs in adolescence.
ObjectivesTo investigate family functioning in the families of adolescents with severe REDs assessed before and 6 months after a multidisciplinary family treatment program that combined psychodynamic psychotherapy, parental role intervention and triadic or family-centered intervention.
MethodsSixty-seven families of adolescent patients diagnosed with REDs were assessed for eligibility between July 2017 and October 2020. Family functioning was assessed using the clinical version of LTPc. Nutritional counseling and neuropsychiatric monitoring were also provided.
ResultsWe observed a significant change in the family functioning score for the LTPc phase 2, in which the father interacts with his daughter while the mother acts as a silent observer. This suggests that the fathers, when playing an active role, could improve dyadic family functioning. The treatment was not found to change triadic functioning: a 6-month treatment may not be long enough to modify interactions at the triadic level.
ConclusionsA brief multidisciplinary treatment program may significantly improve family functioning in the families of patients diagnosed with severe REDs. Although appropriate clinical trials are needed to further test the efficacy of this treatment, our study reinforce the concept that treatment programs targeting the individual patient and both the parents should be a first-line approach in adolescents with severe REDs.

Omsite (IMA 2012-025) is a new mineral from the Correc d'en Llinassos, Oms, Pyrénées-Orientales Department, France. It occurs as bright yellow to amber yellow discoidal tablets, flattened on {001}, which form rosettes typically 50–100 μm in diameter. Omsite generally crystallizes on siderite without associated supergene minerals; it occurs less commonly with glaukosphaerite. Crystals have a vitreous to resinous lustre, and are transparent to translucent. Omsite is not fluorescent in either short-wave or long-wave ultraviolet light. It has an estimated hardness of 3 on the Mohs' scale, is brittle with an irregular fracture, and has one poor cleavage on {001}. The calculated density is 3.378 g cm–3. Crystals are uniaxial (–), with indices of refraction of ω = 1.728(3) and ε = 1.66(1), measured in white light. Pleochroism is ω = orange-yellow, ε = pale orange-yellow; ω > ε. The empirical formula [based on 12 (OH + Cl) p.f.u.] is (Ni1.0992+Cu0.6652+Mg0.107Fe0.0453+)Σ 1.916Fe1.0003+(Sb0.9475+As0.072Na0.029)Σ1.048OH11.967Cl0.033. Omsite crystallizes in space group P, with unit-cell parameters a = 5.3506(8), c = 19.5802(15) Å, V = 485.46(10) Å3 and Z = 2 determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The five strongest lines in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern [d in Å, (Irel), (hkl)] are as follows: 4.901, (100), (004); 4.575, (83), (011); 2.3539, (81), (11); 1.8079, (48), (11); 3.781, (34), (103). The crystal structure was solved to R1 = 0.0896 for 356 observed reflections [Fo>4σFo] and 0.1018 for all the 469 unique reflections. Omsite is a layered double hydroxide (LDH) mineral, with a topology consistent with members of the hydrotalcite supergroup and cualstibite group.

The new mineral species arsiccioite, AgHg2TlAs2S6, was discovered in the baryte-pyrite-iron oxide ore deposit exploited at the Monte Arsiccio mine, near Sant’Anna di Stazzema (Apuan Alps, Tuscany, Italy). It occurs as anhedral grains scattered in microcrystalline baryte, associated with cinnabar, laffittite, protochabournéite, pyrite, realgar, Hg-bearing sphalerite and stibnite. Arsiccioite is red, with a metallic to sub-metallic lustre. Minimum and maximum reflectance data for COM wavelengths in air are [λ (nm): R (%)]: 471.1: 29.0/29.4; 548.3: 27.6/28.3; 586.6: 26.1/26.5; 652.3: 24.2/24.6. Electron microprobe analyses give (wt.%): Cu 0.78(6), Ag 8.68(21), Zn 0.47(27), Fe 0.04(1), Hg 35.36(87), Cd 0.20(5), Tl 18.79(33), As 10.77(19), Sb 4.75(10), S 18.08(21), Se 0.07(5), total 97.99(44). On the basis of ΣMe = 6 a.p.f.u., the chemical formula is Ag0.87(2)Cu0.13(1)Zn0.08(4)Fe0.01(1)Hg1.91(5)Cd0.02(1)Tl1.00(2) (As1.56(2)Sb0.42(1))S1.98S6.12(6)Se0.01(1). Arsiccioite is tetragonal, I2m, with a 10.1386(6), c 11.3441(5) Å, V 1166.1(2) Å3, Z = 4. The main diffraction lines of the powder diagram are [d(in Å), visually estimated intensity, hkl]: 4.195, m, 211; 3.542, m, 103; 3.025, vs, 222; 2.636, m, 114; 2.518, s, 400 and 303. The crystal structure of arsiccioite has been refined by single-crystal X-ray data to a final R1 = 0.030, on the basis of 893 observed reflections. It shows a three dimensional framework of (Hg,Ag)- centred tetrahedra (1 M1 + 2 M2), with channels parallel to [001] hosting TlS6 and (As,Sb)S3 disymmetric polyhedra. Arsiccioite is derived from its isotype routhierite M1CuM2Hg2TlAs2S6 through the double heterovalent substitution M1Cu+ + M2Hg2+ → M1Hg2+ + M2Ag+. This substitution obeys a steric constraint, with Ag+, the largest cation relative to Hg2+ and Cu+, entering the largest M2 site. The ideal crystal chemical formula of arsiccioite is M1HgM2(Hg0.5Ag0.5)2TlAs2S6. The crystal chemistry of the routhierite isotypic series is discussed. Finally, the distribution of Hg ore minerals in the Apuan Alps is reviewed.
First Italian occurrence of cumengéite from Vesuvius: crystal-structure refinement and revision of the chemical formula

The first Italian occurrence of cumengéite, a rare Pb and Cu hydroxychloride, is described from Vesuvius (Italy). Italian cumengéite has a volcanic origin (it occurs in the fumarole), which is unique for that mineral. The mineralogy of Vesuvius' fumarole is outlined briefly. A powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of cumengéite is presented. The crystal structure of cumengéite has been refined (R = 0.036) using single-crystal XRD data. Cumengéite is tetragonal, space group I4/mmm, a 15.1007(2), c 24.4940(4) Å. In the structure of cumengéite there are five independent Pb atoms, which are linked to 6—9 anions in five different ways. The structural study revealed the presence of two independent and previously unobserved water molecules, and led to the revision of the accepted chemical formula for the mineral: the new formula is Cu20Pb21Cl42(OH)40·6H2O. Analytical data taken from the literature for cumengéite from Boléo, Mexico (the type locality), as well as a new structural study carried out on the type material confirmed the new formula.

The main objective of this research was to utilize pollen monitoring methodology to predict olive yields in three Mediterranean olive cultivation areas (Spain, Italy and Tunisia) and their relationships with the olive oil price dynamics. Moreover, olive yield and olive oil production compared with olive oil price trends in the last two decades was evaluated. The statistical analyses confirmed that biological parameters such as the pollen emission, the pollen season start (Pss), the full flowering (Ff) date or the pollen season length (Psl) showed positive correlation values with productive parameters, especially the Pollen Index (Pi). However, the difficulty to define clear relationships with oil price for optimizing the marketing strategies can be due to the olive sector European policy and to the complex international olive oil market situation. The occurrence of unharvested trees was increased and the reduction in agricultural operations as well as non-harvesting could become more widespread above all in traditional extensive systems.
Impact of a tannin extract on digestibility, ruminal fermentation and duodenal flow of amino acids in steers fed maize silage and concentrate containing soybean meal or canola meal as protein source

Four Holstein steers (297 ± 56 kg of body weight (BW)) fitted with duodenal cannula and rumen catheter, were housed in metabolism cages and used in a 4 × 4 Latin Square trial to evaluate the effect of both protein source and Acacia mearnsii tannin extract on digestibility, ruminal fermentation, rumen microbial protein synthesis, N utilization and on duodenal flow of individual amino acids. The diet was offered at restricted amount of 25 g of dry matter (DM)/kg BW and consisted of maize silage plus concentrate, in a proportion of 0·7:0·3 (DM basis) respectively. Concentrate was formulated with either soybean meal or canola meal as protein source, with or without 50 g/kg of A. mearnsii tannin extract (i.e. 15 g/kg of total dietary DM). There was no effect of protein source on most variables. The apparent and true organic matter (OM) digestibilities, as well as neutral detergent fibre (NDF) digestibility were negatively affected by tannin extract inclusion without, however, affecting digestible OM intake. The amount of nitrogen (N) excreted in faeces increased whereas the urinary N excretion decreased in tannin extract treatments. No interaction time × treatment was detected for any rumen variable and no treatment effect was observed for rumen fluid pH and reducing sugars concentration. Rumen fluid concentration of ammonia N was lower for the canola meal plus tannin extract treatment. Rumen concentration of α-amino compounds was not affected by tannin extract but was higher when canola meal was the protein source. The duodenal flow of OM, total N, α-amino N and non-ammonia non-microbial N increased with tannin extract inclusion, whereas the duodenal flow of microbial N was not affected by treatment. For both protein sources, the amount of most individual amino acids flowing to the duodenum increased due to tannin extract addition. In conclusion, the dietary inclusion of 15 g/kg DM of tannin extract from A. mearnsii improved the amino acid supply independently of whether the protein source was canola meal or soybean meal, without affecting the amino acid profile, to steers fed maize silage plus concentrate, with a minor but significant impact on OM digestibility.

The formation and the evolution of axisymmetric vortex rings in a uniformly rotating fluid, with the rotation axis orthogonal to the ring vorticity, have been investigated by numerical and laboratory experiments. The flow dynamics turned out to be strongly affected by the presence of the rotation. In particular, as the background rotation increases, the translation velocity of the ring decreases, a structure with opposite circulation forms ahead of the ring and an intense axial vortex is generated on the axis of symmetry in the tail of the ring. The occurrence of these structures has been explained by the presence of a self-induced swirl flow and by inspection of the extra terms in the Navier–Stokes equations due to rotation. Although in the present case the swirl was generated by the vortex ring itself, these results are in agreement with those of Virk et al. (1994) for polarized vortex rings, in which the swirl flow was initially assigned as a ‘degree of polarization’.
If the rotation rate is further increased beyond a certain value, the flow starts to be dominated by Coriolis forces. In this flow regime, the impulse imparted to the fluid no longer generates a vortex ring, but rather it excites inertial waves allowing the flow to radiate energy. Evidence of this phenomenon is shown.
Finally, some three-dimensional numerical results are discussed in order to justify some asymmetries observed in flow visualizations.
Tratamiento a largo plazo de la esquizofrenia crónica con risperidona: un estudio con concentraciones plasmáticas

Se trató a 24 pacientes ambulatorios esquizofrénicos crónicos con una edad media de 37,21 años ± 9,96 DT con risperidona (RSP) en una dosis de 2-9 mg/día (media = 4,46 mg/día ± 1,30 DT, media = 0,06 mg/kg ± 0,01 DT) durante un año.
La evaluación clínica se realizó con la Escala de Evaluación Psiquiátrica Breve (BPRS), la Escala de Síntomas Positivos y Negativos (PANSS), la Escala de Evaluación de los Efectos Secundarios Extrapiramidales (EPSE) y una lista para los Efectos Secundarios Anticolinérgicos (ACS) en T0 y luego después de 1 (TI), 2 (T2), 3 (T3), 6 (T6), 9 (T9) y 12 (TI2) meses. Se determinaron las concentraciones de RSP y 9-hidroxi-risperidona (9OH-RSP) en T12 por el método CLAR. Los valores medios de la BPRS y la PANSS mostraron una mejoría significativa durante el estudio. No resultó ninguna correlación entre la dosis de RSP (mg/kg) y las concentraciones plasmáticas de RSP, de 9OH-RSP o el grupo activo. Se observó una correlación positiva entre la edad y el gmpo activo y también entre las concentraciones plasmáticas de RSP y 9OH-RSP Se observó una relación curvilínea entre el grupo activo y la mejoría en la PANSS (%). Los pacientes con la mejora mayor en la PANSS mostraron concentraciones plasmáticas de RSP + 9OH-RSP de 15-30 ng/mL. La RSP parece ser un fármaco bastante efectivo. Sin embargo, parece difícil idear programas de dosis apropiados y la determinación de la concentración plasmática parece ser necesaria en algunos casos.

The buoyancy range, which represents a transition from large-scale wave-dominated motions to small-scale turbulence in the oceans and the atmosphere, is investigated through large-eddy simulations. The model presented here uses a continual forcing based on large-scale standing internal waves and has a spectral truncation in the isotropic inertial range. Evidence is presented for a break in the energy spectra from the anisotropic k−3 buoyancy range to the small-scale k−5/3 isotropic inertial range. Density structures that form during wave breaking and periods of high strain rate are analysed. Elongated vertical structures produced during periods of strong straining motion are found to collapse in the subsequent vertically compressional phase of the strain resulting in a zone or patch of mixed fluid.
Direct simulations of turbulent flow in a pipe rotating about its axis

Flow in a circular pipe rotating about its axis, at low Reynolds number, is investigated. The simulation is performed by a finite difference scheme, second-order accurate in space and in time. A non-uniform grid in the radial direction yields accurate solutions with a reasonable number of grid points. The numerical method has been tested for the non-rotating pipe in the limit ν→0 to prove the energy conservation properties. In the viscous case a grid refinement check has been performed and some conclusions about drag reduction have been reached. The mean and turbulent quantities have been compared with the numerical and experimental non-rotating pipe data of Eggels et al. (1994a, b). When the pipe rotates, a degree of drag reduction is achieved in the numerical simulations just as in the experiments. Through the visualization of the vorticity field the drag reduction has been related to the modification of the vortical structures near the wall. A comparison between the vorticity in the non-rotating and in the high rotation case has shown a spiral motion leading to the transport of streamwise vorticity far from the wall.
